House Expansions

House Expansions and Remodels

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, you can choose where to build your home. You start in a tent, but Tom Nook remodels it to be a house. After you pay him off, you can add a basement, second floor, and rooms to the left, right, and back. You can also make your rooms bigger, and you can change the appearance of the exterior of your house.

Adding Floors and Making Bigger Rooms

After you pay off your loan to Tom Nook, you can talk to him in the Tom Nook Housing office in the north part of town. He gives you the option to add new rooms or expand existing ones. When you ask him to build a new room or expand one, he starts a new loan that you have to pay off before you can do any more remodeling. These are the rooms you can add:

Perfect fruit guide

Perfect Fruit Guide

Your native fruit trees may sometimes grow a 'perfect fruit'. This fruit looks different from the others and is worth more. You can plant a perfect fruit to create a perfect fruit tree, but this tree will die after a few harvests. Perfect fruits sell for a higher price in a town where the fruits are not native, making them an excellent way to earn more bells. This page explains the details of perfect fruits.

Which is my Native Fruit?

Your native fruit is whichever fruit was growing on your trees when you first created your town. If you don't remember, try selling an apple, pear, peach, orange, and cherry in your town. Whichever one sells for the lowest price is your native fruit.

Making Perfect Fruit Grow on your Trees

In your town, perfect fruits can only grow on trees of your native fruit type. Therefore, you should plant a lot of native fruit trees and harvest them regularly. If you are lucky, one of them will have a perfect fruit on it. The perfect fruit will look different from the others. Perfect apples have speckles, perfect oranges have a bump on top, perfect peaches and perfect pears are golden in color, and perfect cherries are golden on the bottom.
Please note that only apples, pears, peaches, cherries, and oranges can be perfect. You CAN'T have perfect lemons, perfect persimmons, perfect durians, perfect lychees, perfect coconuts, or perfect bananas.

Planting Perfect Fruits

If you plant a perfect fruit in a town where it's the native fruit type, the resulting tree will have only perfect fruits on it. However, if you plant a perfect fruit in a town where it is NOT native (e.g. plant a perfect peach in a town where oranges are native), it will NOT create a perfect fruit tree. Instead, it turns into a normal fruit tree.
Perfect fruit trees take three days to grow to full size, just like regular trees.

Harvesting Perfect Fruits

You can shake perfect fruit trees to harvest the fruits as usual. However, after you harvest the perfect fruits several times, the tree will die, and one of the fruits will be rotten.
Warning! Be careful not to try selling the rotten fruit! If you try selling a rotten fruit, not only will Reese make you pay her to dispose of it, but she won't give you any money for anything else you sell at the same time! Try to find a trash can furniture item for your house so you can simply throw the rotten fruit away.
After a perfect fruit tree dies, it won't produce fruit anymore. You will need to chop it down and plant a new perfect fruit to make a new perfect fruit tree grow. Each tree gives at least four harvests and at most seven before it dies.
Important! Be sure to save some perfect fruits so you don't run out of them when the perfect fruit trees die! I recommend planting a new perfect fruit tree as soon as an old perfect fruit tree dies.

Making a Lot of Bells with Perfect Fruits

Your native perfect fruits are pretty valuable in your own town (worth 600 bells), but they are five times more valuable in towns where it's not the native type of fruit (3000 bells). Therefore, to make a lot of bells from perfect fruits, take them to a town where they are not the native type of fruit and sell them there.

Town Ordinances

Town Ordinances

A town ordinance is a rule that changes certain things about your town. You can enact a town ordinance by sitting in your mayor chair and asking Isabelle about town ordinances. There are four ordinances: Beautiful Town, Early Bird Town, Nightlife Town, and Luxury Town. This page explains how to set a town ordinance and the effects that each ordinance has.

How to Enact a Town Ordinance

To sign a town ordinance into law, you must first earn 100 mayor points. Then, when you sit in your mayor chair, you can choose to set a town ordinance. Whenever you change the town ordinance, you must pay 20,000 bells.

Ordinances and their Effects

The following table lists the available ordinances and the effects that they have on your town.

How to Grow Flowers

How to Grow Flowers

The following guide explains how to plant seeds and grow flowers in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Flowers might appear spontaneously in your town. You can also buy flower seeds at the Nooklings' shop and Garden Center. You can get a watering can to keep your flowers happy and healthy if they start to wilt.

How to Plant Flowers

If you have a flower seed bag, you can plant it in your town. Stand on some grass or dirt in your town, then open up your inventory. Tap the bag of flower seeds, then choose Plant. The flower will be planted on the ground where you are standing. You don't need to use a shovel to plant flowers.

How to Move Flowers Around

You can pick up a flower that has been planted. Stand on or near a flower, then press Y to pick it up and put it in your inventory. Then you can walk to a different location and tap the flower to plant it there. Or, in your inventory screen, you can drag the flower to the ground next to the person in your inventory to plant the flower where you are standing.

Watering Flowers

If you have a watering can, you can use it to water flowers. Simply stand in front of the flower that you want to water, and use the watering can. A flower that has been watered will sparkle all day long. The sparkles go away at 6AM each day.

How to Get a Watering Can

Buy a watering can from the Nooklings' shop or the Garden Center. You can also get a free watering can from Isabelle when you start the game. Read the starting the game guide for more information. You can also get a golden and a silver watering can, which can water multiple flowers at a time. Read the golden and silver tools guide for more information.

Wilting Flowers

Sometimes you might see a brown flower in your town. This is a wilting flower. If you do not water a wilting flower, it will disappear the next day.

Trampling Flowers

If you run through a flower, you might destroy the flower by trampling it. Be sure not to run near flowers! You can walk on flowers safely with no risk of trampling them.

Hybrid Flowers

By planting flowers of the same type next to each other (roses next to roses, pansies next to pansies, etc.) you might find new colors of flowers next to them the next day. These unusually colored flowers are called hybrid flowers. Read the hybrids guide for more information.
